Hey there, it's Amanda
Judy Hesser's Sour Cream Cheesecake
My mom, Judy, took on Nabisco and won. After the company discontinued its Famous Chocolate Wafers—essential to many chocolate crusts and ice box cakes—my mom set out to create a substitute. And she nailed it with cocoa, butter, and…Nabisco Nilla Wafers. So maybe Nabisco won? Coin toss! What matters is that we can all still make my mom's fantastic two-layer Sour Cream Cheesecake with its chocolate crust. Here's my TikTok how-to. Cheers to Judy, Food52's new Test Kitchen team member, reporting in from Florida!
Dansk JHQ Copper Casserole With Lid
Dansk Ellipse Teak Salad Bowl
Rare Copper and Teak Dansk Designs
It took us more than a year to find manufacturers who could help us fabricate some of Dansk's most iconic pieces with the quality that we require and Dansk deserves. But Eli Ramos, our head of sourcing, is persistent! We are over the moon to be launching the first of many beloved designs as well as a few lesser-known gems. Two that I'm ordering:
  • Jens Quistgaard's teak Ellipse Salad Bowl isn't only beautiful but has an oval opening that keeps salad greens from falling out as you toss your salad. The bowl is made using staved teak, a labor-intensive and low-waste technique that involves piecing together staves of wood to form the bowl.
  • The JHQ Copper Casserole, designed in 1960, and the most elegant cookware I've ever seen.
BROOKLYN GRANGE
BROOKLYN GRANGE
The Farm Next to Our HQ
I visited our Navy Yard neighbor, Brooklyn Grange, which pioneered building rooftop gardens in New York City in 2010. The company still sells vegetables from its original rooftop farm, next door to our building (seen in the background above). Brooklyn Grange also has gardening classes for kids, hosts rooftop weddings, runs a CSA, and designs rooftop farms and gardens for buildings around the city, including the Javits Center.

Female Founders Fund
King Restaurant
A Night Out With Founders
Last week, I broke from my introvert's cave (aka my apartment) and co-hosted a dinner for female leaders in food start-ups and media with Anu Duggal, founder of the venture capital firm Female Founders Fund. We gathered at King Restaurant (started by women!). Throughout the night, two themes emerged: fundraising is nearly impossible right now, and it's extra important to build community in tough times.

As we head into the holiday season with a shaky economy, and with wars and humanitarian crises flaring around the world, let's be there for each other. If you're not sure how to take care of your loved ones right now, a home-cooked meal is always a good way to start.
Enjoy the fall weekend!
