Welcome to Sunday Reset, where we share how we're unwinding and what we have planned for the week ahead. This time, our editor Julia is thinking about gifts.
Good morning! We've officially hit that point in December when the holidays feel suddenly way too close and shipping deadlines are creeping up. If you're doing gift exchanges, white elephants, or just trying to check off everyone on your list, the pressure is real.
Earlier this spring, I made a more sentimental guide, asking 30+ moms what they actually wanted for Mother's Day (can you guess what their top picks were?). I'm working on the follow-up now, and one thing keeps coming up again and again: It really is the thought that counts—and sometimes homemade beats anything you can buy.
Which brings me to this week's focus: DIY gifts. We have so many edible gift ideas you can make right now from limoncello to lemon caramels. I pulled a few favorites below that box up beautifully and even ship well. And if you want more, keep an eye on our Handmade Holiday page.
I've been thinking a lot about "classic" Christmas recipes—and how, unlike Thanksgiving, everyone's version looks totally different. During that little rabbit hole, one tradition stood out to me, one my dad and I revisited last year: glögg. So I'll leave you with this: simmer a pot of Glögg or Hot Toddies, bake a batch of panettone cookies, and start passing them out.
One of my favorite books on home design. Scroll for more of my picks below.
Last week, I fessed up to my perfectionism, and you did not run screaming. Thank you for your big hearts. This week is about as gift-guide-y as I will get. I’m going in a few different directions. Hang onto the rope.
First, let’s cover what I think of as foundational gifts, the one or two things that you give to multiple people. I used to send wreaths. This year, friends, family, and colleagues are getting one of the following:
This Is From Roy Panettone It’s the most tender, buttery, fragrant panettone around. I usually stick with his classic Candied Orange Raisin, but this year we went for the Pistachio Cherry.
Ojai Olive Oil Ojai citrus is not yet at its prime in December, so I opted for the Andalucian olive oil, which is rich and kicky.
27 Gift-Worthy Books On Home
A sampler from all our 27 recommendations below.
Home design books are another excellent gift. Vintage or new, they hold onto their cultural value (see below as proof; several date back 30 to 50 years). They’re also a great coffee table object that can be enjoyed by the recipient’s house guests. Below, I rounded up recommendations from some of the smartest minds in the world of house consciousness. There’s a little something for everyone, from product design history tomes to classic interior decorating guides to home tours from around the world, with even a few kids’ books.
Thanks to Joanna Goddard (Big Salad); Laura Fenton (Living Small); Amanda Jane Jones (Studio Notes); Yolanda Edwards (Club Yolo); Gisela Williams (w-report); and Kate Watson-Smyth (Mad About The House)—all Substacks I highly recommend subscribing to! My picks are at the end. ...
