Good morning. In honor of Presidents' Day, I'd like to begin today's newsletter by reminding you that George H.W. Bush nearly banned broccoli from his White House. Seriously—there's an entire Wikipedia page titled George H.W. Bush Broccoli Comments, and after reading its "analysis" section I've become certain: If I were eight years old, I would've loved dining with Bush 1.0.
As I'm writing this—no longer in third grade—the 41st White House has entirely lost its culinary appeal. That said, I've never been more intrigued by Original Bush's near broccoli ban. In fact, it's left me so inspired, I've prematurely arranged my own Presidential Dining Decrees (you know, on the off chance that one day the American public think a listicle artist is who we need overseeing the nuclear codes).
The Sheet Pan Broccoli Statute
Broccoli, baked on a sheet pan, once a week. At least once. Ideally it's Ina's Parmesan-roasted broccoli or this version with tahini. If I drive the country into a recession (likely), we'll happily settle for this roasted frozen broccoli recipe.
The Amanda Approved Surf & Turf Taco Act (AASTTA)
The name needs work, but the logic behind AASTTA is sound: Everyone deserves to enjoy Amanda's low-maintenance fish tacos alongside her flank steak with green sauce at least once a month.
Mezcal Amaro On Tap
I've said it before and will say it again: The mezcal amaro is the best cocktail on our site. It's what a Dark & Stormy wants to be. And it's good year round. So good, in fact, I'm committed to blowing the entire federal budget researching how to get it on tap. If you think that sounds extreme, you obviously haven't made (or simply read) the recipe, which you can find here.
