Plus the "after" of my Christmas tree. | | | | | | | | | | | Here's the "after" of our tree. I had big plans to make a popcorn garland this year, and those plans are moving to 2024! On the right is the panoply of goodies sent to me from my Holiday Swap partner, Cory, from Utah. Cory baked semolina currant shortbread, Sambuca brownies (Gourmet, 1996) and David Lebovitz's Peanut Brittle, and shared all sorts of other local treats, including Ritual Chocolate and a pinecone-shaped beeswax candle. Hope you'll join next year's Holiday Swap so you get in on the fun! | | | My social media is full of memes about how bad 2023 was. It did kind of suck. But at Food52 we see it as our mission to bring you joy, humor, inspiration, and a healthy dose of escape from the rest of the world. So I want to share some of our best delights from the year to remind you that maybe 2023 sucked a little less than you thought! | | | | | | 1. What's a Kringle? | | | Our Resident Baker Erin Jeanne McDowell came to our Brooklyn HQ to show us how to make one of her favorite holiday treats, Kringle. But first, she asked the Food52 staff to define a Kringle. Hint: It has nothing to do with Kris. | | | | | | | 2. Just Add Water…to Water | | | Possibly our most popular recipe this year: "Classic Cooked Water." Don't miss the comments. | | | | | | | 3. Everyone Was Eating Martinis | | | Food Editor Emily Ziemski's Dirty Martini Salad Dressing recipe caught everyone's attention: first on our Instagram, where it became one of our most popular Reels, and then on Eater, which heralded it as the first sign of an "edible martini" craze. | | | | | | | 4. Lucas for the Win | | | Everyone loves Lucas Sin's cooking videos, not just for the recipes, but also for the little tricks he sprinkles in—like the golden ratio for a Chinese vinaigrette dressing he shares in our most popular Reel of the year. | | | | | | | 5. Famous Chocolate Wafers Were Canceled | | | When bakers discovered that Nabisco discontinued its Famous Chocolate Wafers some took to the streets to protest! And some feistily figured out substitutions. My mom, one of the legions made unhappy by Nabisco's decision, vowed to find a worthy replacement for the chocolate crust of her famous sour cream cheesecake, and I tested her winning substitution. | | | | | | | 6. We Learned the Meaning of Trypophobia | | | This spring, Escapism Cooking star Mandy Lee revealed her Elvis-inspired riff on martabak, a street food popular across Asia, and sparked terror among those of our followers who can't stand the sight of small holes or bumps. The fear is real and it's called trypophobia. | | | | | | | 7. What Would Barbie Cook? | | | We knew Barbie would be big, so Emily Ziemski imagined what Barbie might whip up in her dream kitchen. Her top guess? This pretty, pink Genius cake. | | | | | | | 8. Recipes We Loved | | | Jollof Rice, the classic West African dish, remains our most popular recipe ever. Since it was published in 2016, it has received over 2.5 million visits—more than 400,000 of them this year. Our most popular recipe published this year? Emily's salad dressing, natch, followed by Jessie Sheehan's One-Bowl Lemon Cake with Citrus Glaze. (One community member boldly declared it better than Ina's, which is legendary for its turbo-charged lemony-ness!) | | | | | | | 9. The Year of Taylor Swift | | | Whether you scored tickets to Taylor's sold-out Eras tour or just endured friends and relatives raving about it, Swiftie fever was inescapable. We got into the frenzy, too, and made the Chai Sugar Cookies that Swift adapted from Joy the Baker's recipe—which became one of our most popular TikToks. | | | | | | | 10. The Year We Embraced TikTok | | | Speaking of TikTok, if you've been following us there, you may have noticed all the fun we've been having in the Test Kitchen, talking about weed gummies, planning 2000s-era dinner parties, asking ChatGPT to generate recipes, and inventing dishes รก la Mad Libs. This was a challenging year in many ways, but we kept finding ways on the site, as well as on our other channels, to bring more joy to cooking. | | | | | | We have a lot in store for next year. I can't share details yet, but I can promise that you're going to see a lot of exciting changes around Food52. Get pumped—we are! | | | In the meantime, my very best wishes for a happy, healthy holiday! | | | Amanda Hesser Founder & Executive Chair | | | | | | | | | All offers are valid for a limited time, while supplies last, and on in stock items only.
